- Use a 3rd party to fix your phone’s home button. You know, the new one with the fancy fingerprint reader (some reports also mention this occurring when you repair or upgrade your screen in the same manner).
- You upgrade to iOS 9.
When this happens, your phone is effectively bricked. Currently (as of this post), there is no known way to fix your phone, and you’ll need to purchase another. In the future, you may be able to get a replacement phone if the lawyer’s have there way with Apple, but for now, you’re stuck.
An Ounce of Prevention
If you already are receiving the “Error 53” message, there’s not much you can do, except maybe join in on the class-action law suites that is sure to crop up. If you have had your home button replaced or repaired (or possibly the screen repaired) and haven’t upgraded to iOS version 9, don’t upgrade past version 8!
We hope this helps some of you avoid what we think is a controlling and selfish act on Apple’s part.
